Learn how to get your family ready for hurricane season

Prepare for Hurricanes and other Disasters

In Northwest Florida nearly 600 volunteers respond to disasters when they occur. Americans know they
can trust the Red Cross to help people with immediate needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and
encouragement. We begin saving lives long before disaster strikes by helping individuals and whole
communities learn to prepare for disasters and take steps to minimize their destructive potential.

BE A DISASTER VOLUNTEER

Single family fires, the most common disaster, have forced people out of their homes and often the
family loses all of its possessions.  In Northwest Florida the American Red Cross responds to a house
fire every 41 hours. Volunteer Disaster Action Team members make this service available across the
four county jurisdiction.

PREPARE YOUR FAMILY

If needed, the Red Cross provides the means to pay for needed items including groceries, new clothing,
and temporary housing.

The Red Cross feeds disaster victims and emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned family
members outside the disaster area, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and helps
those affected by disaster to access other available resources.

In Northwest Florida Disaster Action Team members and large scale relief operation volunteers ensure
the American Red Cross can be there when help is needed.

New in 2006, the Safe and Well website provides community members with a way to search for loved
ones lost during disaster. This site allows anyone involved in a disaster to list themselves as "safe and
well".

Some 83,000 Red Cross volunteers respond to more than 67,000 disasters each year. Whether an
entire region is devastated by a storm or a handful of families are displaced by a flood, Americans know
they can trust the Red Cross to help people with immediate needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and
encouragement. We begin saving lives long before disaster strikes by helping individuals and whole
communities learn to prepare for disasters and take steps to minimize their destructive potential.

Single family fires, the most common disaster, have forced people out of their homes and often the
family loses all of its possessions. The Red Cross Disaster Action Teams respond to this type of
disaster as well as disasters that affect large numbers of people.

Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting people's immediate emergency disaster-caused needs.
When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, and health and mental
health services to address basic human needs. In addition to these services, the core of Red Cross
disaster relief is the assistance given to individuals and families affected by disaster to enable them to
resume their normal daily activities independently.

If needed, the Red Cross provides the means to pay for needed items including groceries, new clothing,
temporary housing, emergency home repairs, transportation, essential household items, medicines, and
occupational tools. The Red Cross also helps those needing long-term recovery assistance when all
other resources, including insurance benefits, community and personal resources and government
assistance  are not available or are inadequate. All assistance is based on verified disaster-caused
needs.

The Red Cross also feeds disaster victims and emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned
family members outside the disaster area, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and
helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources.
